Read in our events section about past events that we have hosted. Last year we hosted a fantastic Fairtrade fashion show.  This year SWOT took up the idea and had a whole Fairtrade section in their fundraising fashion show, with clothing from People Tree and jewellery from Oxfam.

Read below to find out about the process that we underwent to become a Fairtrade University.

The Campaign

Approximately two years ago Mary Durkin, the then Student’s Union President, approached the Head of Catering Services, Miss Eileen Kennedy, in regards the overwhelming demand from students for the provision of Fairtrade products within the Students Union Catering Services. The University Catering Services responded by increasing provision of Fairtrade products throughout the campus.

However it was not until last years (2004) Fairtrade fortnight that the initial push for the ‘Make Queen’s University Fairtrade’ campaign occurred. A campaign group consisting of students, supported by Christian Aid and Tearfund, organised the signing of a petition throughout the University during the awareness raising fortnight. In total approximately 2,500 students signatures were collected indicating the massive support of the student body for QUB to become a Fairtrade University.

Progress has been steadily maintained over the past year. A Steering group has been established in order to facilitate the development of this proposal and extra marketing for the Fairtrade label on campus. This group intends to organise subsequent events to promote Fairtrade within the academic year, alongside ensuring that the goals and objectives of the QUB Fairtrade policy are upheld. For forthcoming events check out the events section of the web-site.
