What is Fairtrade

Fairtrade ensures that farmers receive a fair price for their crops. Fairtrade was created in response to the increase in awareness of the scandalous price that many growers receive for crops that we use every day for example coffee, tea and sugar. The Fairtrade mark has become well recognised on today’s high street and it is now possible to purchase over 780 Fairtrade food stuffs, ranging from cashew nuts to strawberry jam, fruit juice to chocolate.

We at QUB recognise that many farmers hard work goes unrewarded, receiving little money for their produce. We realise that we are highly dependent on these growers to supply us with so many products that we take for granted. Therefore we are encouraging all students and staff to look out for the Fairtrade mark around the university and buy Fairtrade products whenever possible. As responsible consumers buying Fairtrade products is one simple step we can take in order to ensure that growers in the developing world are treated fairly and with respect.
